Chicken and the nervous breakdown

I tried to bake a whole chicken last night. I failed miserably and ended up having a nervous breakdown.

Yes, over chicken.

Ok, there was more to it than the chicken but it was the catalyst that brought it on.

I suck at being a housewife. I can’t cook for shit. I suck at keeping the house clean. Mt. Washmore was not nearly as big as when I was working a “real” job and my little one has been driving me absolutely insane. I can’t hack it as a stay at home mom. I don’t have what it takes. It’s not that the job is hard (sorry all you SAHM out there, it really isn’t), it’s just that I have no desire to do any of it. I don’t want to cook, clean, and otherwise sit at home. I don’t miss the adult interaction of a real job, I never talked to anyone anyways, I just don’t like doing the housewife stuff.

My husband was telling me the other day about how the wife of his fire captain (who just had a baby) wasn’t going to be going back to work. Apparently this woman is fanfreakintastic because he just HAD to tell me how she gets up at 5 in the morning to make her husband some bacon for breakfast, or slow cooks some chicken so he can take it to the station with him when he goes. I am not living up to my end of the bargain obviously.

So, after cooking my chicken for over 2 hours, the kids screaming at me that they are starving, my chicken still being raw, and any hope of that perfectly roasted chicken sitting on the perfectly set table being totally destroyed, I just broke down. Right there in the kitchen. I completely lost it.

And then we went out to eat (yet again).

  1. Did you tell your husband to shut the hell up? Because I will if you didn't.

We've all had days like this. It's okay. Hugs.

To bake a chicken just season the thawed chicken on the outside and bake at 375 for around 60 minutes.

I was a SAHM for 17 years and I did the cooking, cleaning, volunteering, chauffeuring, and everything else thing and my husband never thought it was good enough. No one is perfect. No one. There is stress if you're a SAHM and stress if you're a working mom.

Try to be easier on yourself and might I suggest finding a few hours a week just for you. It helps.

  2. You have taken on a tremendous amount of responsibility by pursuing nursing school. You're doing enough.

As a man I can tell you there is a 97.8% chance your husband has no clue as to how what he said was going to affect you.

My wife couldn't cook at all when I married her and I still think she's a great wife.

  3. Oh sweetie! Here is the real deal with cooking a whole chicken:

Buy one of those pre-cooked roasters at the store. Pop it in a baking dish and put it in your oven til it's warm throughout. (Even better - bring home a cooked whole roaster. You only need to "bake" it in the oven for 10 minutes - all for show!)

  4. To add to what AYC says: cook up a can of mushrooms with garlic or an onion along with the chicken ( I also microwave a potato or two for 6 - 10 minutes) and there u go! You will also have the SMELL to go with! MMMMM!
My husband not only does most of the cooking, he also does most of the cleaning and vacuuming and does his own laundry. Tell your husband that....and maybe he will feel bad about not doing more.... ;)
